Coach Dougherty is a retired high school coach from North Dakota. Coach Dougherty coached wrestling and track and field (31 years each) and football (25 years), with 28 years coaching at Watford City, ND. Coach Dougherty was selected region COTY on numerous occasions in both wrestling and track and field, NDHSCA state wrestling COTY in 1998, and NHSACA (National High School Athletic Coaches Association) national wrestling COTY in 2005. Dave was inducted into the NDHSCA Hall of Fame (2003), NHSACA National Hall of Fame (2010), ND Wrestling Hall of Fame (2019), Watford City Hall of Fame (2023) and the MSUM Hall of Fame (2024). Coach Dougherty served as the Class B wrestling coach for 15 years, the NDHSAA wrestling advisory committee for 20 years, the NDHSCA Board of Directors for 6 years, the NHSACA board of directors for 21 years, the executive committee for 5 years and executive director for the NHSACA for 11 years. Coach Dougherty earned his bachelor’s degree from Minot State University in 1978 and his Master of Education from the College of St. Scholastica in 2000.
